Universal Centrality and Collision Energy Trends for v2 Measurements From 2D Angular Correlations

چکیده
We have measured the pt-integrated quadrupole component of two-particle azimuth correlations (related to quantity v2, denoted in this case by v2{2D}) via two-dimensional (2D) angular autocorrelations on (η, φ) for unidentified hadrons in Au-Au collisions at 62 and 200 GeV. The 2D autocorrelation provides a method to remove non-quadrupole contributions to v2 (conventionally termed “nonflow”) under the assumption that such processes produce significant dependence on pair-wise relative η within the detector acceptance. We hypothesize, based on empirical observations, that non-quadrupole contributions are dominated by minijets or minimum-bias jets. Using the optical Glauber eccentricity model for initial-state geometry we find simple and accurate universal energy and centrality trends for the quadrupole component. Centrality trends are determined only by the initial state (impact parameter b and center-of-mass energy √ sNN ). There is no apparent dependence on evolving system dynamics (e.g., equation of state or number of secondary collisions). Our measurements of the quadrupole and non-quadrupole components have implications for the contributions to v2. They suggest that the main source of the difference between v2{2} and v2{4} (or v2{2D}) is measured properties of minijets. PACS. Correlated Event-by-Event Fluctuations of Flow Harmonics
We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry ...
متن کاملHigh-pT Particle Production with Respect to the Reaction Plane
The PHENIX Run4 data-set provides a powerful opportunity for exploring the angular anisotropy of identified particle yields at high pT . Complementing traditional v2 measurements, we present π 0 yields as a function of emission angle with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at √ sNN = 200 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of the angular anisotropy allows us to probe the density and...
متن کاملElliptic Flow from Minijet Production in Heavy Ion Collisions
We calculate the contribution to the elliptic flow observable v2 from two–particle correlations in minijet production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We use a minijet production cross section derived in a model inspired by saturation approach to high energy scattering. Resulting differential elliptic flow v2(pT ) is an increasing function of pT for transverse momenta below the satura...
متن کاملSystem Size and Energy Dependence of Elliptic Flow
The elliptic flow v2 is presented for the Cu+Cu collisions at √ sNN = 62.4 and 200 GeV, as a function of pseudorapidity. Comparison to results for the Au+Au collisions at the same energies shows a reduction of about 20% in the flow observed for a centrality selection of 0-40%. The centrality dependent flow, expressed as a function of the number of participants Npart, is compared for the Cu+Cu a...
متن کامل2 00 5 Strange and charged particle elliptic flow in Pb + Au collisions at 158
We present Λ and π elliptic flow measurements from Pb+Au collisions at the highest SPS energy. The data, collected by the CERES experiment which covers η = 2.05, 2.70 with full azimuthal coverage and wide pT sensitivity up to 3.5 GeV/c, can be used to test hydrodynamical models and show sensitivity to the EoS. The value of v2 as a function of centrality and pT is presented. Values of v2 observe...
